Telemachus begins to fill the place of a Homeric hero. After three years of fooling them, the suitors realize Penelope has been weaving and unweaving Odysseus' death shroud each day. This is important because the suitors were led to believe Penelope would pick a husband after she completes weaving. An omen from Zeus appeared in this chapter (birds) and it signified 1. Odysseus would return home in the twentieth year. 2. Odysseus will have suffered much. 3. Odysseus will lose his comrades 4. No one would recognize Odysseus when he comes.
